Er kämpfte gegen Rocky, er jagte den Predator, er half dem Mandalorianer und Grogu. Und er war nicht zuletzt für den vielleicht berühmtesten, mit Sicherheit aber kultigsten Handschlag der Filmgeschichte mitverantwortlich: Carl Weathers.
Leider müssen wir jetzt Abschied nehmen. Wie sein Manager bekannt gab, ist der bekannte Schauspieler friedlich im Schlaf in seinem Haus in Los Angeles verstorben. Er wurde 76 Jahre alt.
Weathers war für einige Jahre Football-Spieler in der NFL, ehe er diese Karriere 1974 zugunsten der Schauspielerei aufgab. 1976 folgte dann bereits sein großer Durchbruch mit seiner bis heute wohl berühmtesten Rolle, die des Apollo Creed in Rocky. Diesen Part sollte er auch in den drei folgenden Fortsetzung erneut verkörpern.
1987 spielte er neben Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator mit und sorgte dort für den eingangs erwähnten berühmten Handschlag. Es folgten weitere Rollen, unten anderen in Happy Gilmore.
Auch im Fernsehen hatte er immer wieder Auftritte und trat als Gaststar in einigen Serien auf, darunter The Shield, Arrested Development oder Emergency Room - Die Notaufnahme.
In den letzten Jahren wurde Weathers einer ganz neuen Generation an Fans bekannt, dank seiner Rolle des Greef Karga in Star Wars - The Mandalorian. Hier trat er auch als Regisseur hinter die Kamera, einer Tätigkeit, der er erstmals in den 90ern, ebenfalls in Fernsehserien, nachging.
Sein Manager ließ folgendes Statement verlauten: "Carl war ein außergewöhnlicher Mensch, der ein außergewöhnliches Leben führte. Durch seine Beiträge zu Film, Fernsehen, Kunst und Sport hat er unauslöschliche Spuren hinterlassen und ist weltweit und über Generationen hinweg anerkannt. Er war ein geliebter Bruder, Vater, Großvater, Partner und Freund."
