Konnte man dem von Jack Nicholson verkörperten Joker noch Sympathien entgegenbringen und den comichaften Witz bewundern, dürfte dies bei Heath Ledgers Joker schwerer werden. Der neue Joker soll dem Publikum das Fürchten beibringen. Hatten sich Bale und Ledger am Anfang der Umsetzung noch an dem Psychoterror von Stanley Kubricks "Clockwork Orange" orientiert, so sind sie recht schnell über das Ziel hinausgeschossen und haben damit etwas völlig neues erschaffen. Die Kinofans wird es sicherlich freuen.

Asked about the inspiration for the performance, Ledger cited nothing less than classic Kubrick. “‘A Clockwork Orange’ was a very early starting point for Christian [Bale] and I.
