2019 war ein großes Jahr für Netflix, mit Filmen wie The Irishman, Marriage Story oder Klaus machte man von sich reden und den Studios mächtig Konkurrenz. Auch wenn der populärste Netflix-Titel des Jahres ein anderer gewesen sein soll: Murder Mystery, die Krimi-Komödie mit Adam Sandler und Jennifer Aniston. Ohne Witz!
Hierbei gilt es aber zu berücksichtigen, dass Netflix seine ganz eigenen Parameter zur Bestimmung der Popularität hat - es geht nicht nach der Gesamtzahl von Zuschauern für einen bestimmten Titel, sondern man zählt die Gesamtzahl von Haushalten, die einen Titel während der ersten 28 Tage nach Release mindestens zwei Minuten lang gestreamt haben. Wer also nur mal ein paar Minütchen bei Murder Mystery reingezappt hat, hat unwissentlich schon zur Popularität des Films beigetragen.
2020 könnte sogar ein noch größeres Jahr werden. Auf Twitter listet Netflix über zwei Dutzend Originalfilme auf, die man dieses Jahr wird streamen können (siehe unten, abzüglich der Dokumentationen), und es sind vielleicht noch nicht mal alle. Uns erwarten Filme von Regisseuren wie David Fincher, Ron Howard, Spike Lee, Ben Wheatley und Charlie Kaufman, mit Stars wie Charlize Theron, Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, Chadwick Boseman, Will Ferrell, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep und vielen mehr. Von den meisten haben wir bereits gehört, allerdings haben sich in zwei Fällen die Titel geändert.
So nennt sich der Actionthriller Dhaka, den Anthony und Joe Russo produzieren, nun Out of the Fire. Chris Hemsworth spielt einen furchtlosen Schwarzmarkt-Söldner namens Tyler Rake, der nichts mehr zu verlieren hat, als seine Fähigkeiten gebraucht werden, um den entführten Sohn eines inhaftierten internationalen Gangsterbosses zu retten. Wonderland, der fünfte geheimsame Film von Mark Wahlberg und Regisseur Peter Berg, wurde in Spenser Confidential umgetauft. Dieser Spenser (Wahlberg) ist ein Ex-Cop, der bei Hawk (Winston Duke) einzieht, einem aufstrebenden MMA-Kämpfer mit eigenem Vorstrafenregister. Bei ihren Runden im Fitnessstudio werden die Sticheleien des Duos zu Vertrauen, und sie tun sich zusammen, um einen Doppelmord aufzuklären.
